Davey Johnson graduated from Midland High School in 2004 after moving here from Montana in 2001. Until then Davey spent six years plus almost every summer of his life in Big Sky and Bozeman, Montana, camping and hiking the trails of Yellowstone and the Gallatin Mountains. After high school Davey attended Delta College and then transferred to Montana State University where he studies Physical Education and now, Photography, while serving the Montana National Guard. Davey purchased his first camera when he was deployed in Iraq in 2009 and began learning how to work it to its full capacity. When he got home, he enrolled in a digital photography class at the university and began learning about composition, different lighting and all the basics of photography. He was hooked from then on. He upgraded his equipment, found a job shooting zip lines, high ropes courses and river rafting, and enrolled in a class at Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMPS).
"Shortly after I began looking for as many different kinds of animals as I could find in my spare time. Living in Montana provides me with the perfect opportunity to find these extraordinary creatures nearly everywhere I look, and thanks to this incredible place, I am rarely disappointed. My favorite places to find spectacular views and animals are in the Gallatin National Forest, Glacier National Park and Yellowstone, although it’s not uncommon for me to find great photo ops just simply driving to and from. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoy taking them! Thank you –"
Davey has received a great deal of encouragement from his professors, siting his talent, "keen eye for the shot" and willingness to climb, hike.... do what it takes to find the animals and the views. His most recent purchase was a good pair of snow shoes. Two of his photographs, “Majestic”, and “Fearless” won pages in the 2012 Montana Weather Calendar, and eight of his photographs were selected by National Geographic to be juried in their photo competition. More of Davey's photographs can be found on his facebook page, Davey Johnson Photography. Davey is the son and step-son of Dianne and Bob Granstra of Midland, David Johnson of Big Sky, Montana, brother of Dan Johnson, abroad, and brother of Joe Johnson, Western Michigan University.
